Micheál Martin elected Irish Prime Minister for second time

Micheál Martin has been elected as the Republic of Ireland’s prime minister (Taoiseach) for a second term.

Lawmakers voted 95 to 76 on Thursday to confirm the Fianna Fáil leader’s nomination.

Martin will head a coalition government comprising the two largest centre-right parties, along with support from independent lawmakers.

The vote was delayed by a day after Wednesday’s initial attempt descended into chaos, with opposition protests over speaking rights for independent lawmakers backing the coalition. Parliament was suspended, but the impasse was resolved following overnight talks.

This marks the second consecutive coalition between Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil, parties that have dominated Irish politics since 1937.

Martin, 64, previously served as prime minister from 2020 to 2022 before handing the role to Fine Gael under the coalition’s rotating leadership agreement. Outgoing Prime Minister Simon Harris is slated to return as premier in 2027 under the same agreement.
