Microsoft’s latest layoffs spark concerns for Irish operations

Microsoft has announced plans to lay off fewer than 3% of its global workforce—around 6,000 employees—as part of cost-cutting efforts while it invests heavily in artificial intelligence.

The job cuts will span all levels and locations and are the company’s most significant since the 10,000 layoffs in 2023.

It remains uncertain how the move will affect Microsoft’s Irish operations.

The tech giant employs over 4,000 people in Ireland across various functions, including software development, engineering, data centres, finance, operations, and sales and marketing.

In November 2024, Microsoft announced the addition of 550 engineering and R&D roles at its Dublin office.

The company also owns LinkedIn, which employs more than 2,000 people in Ireland, bringing its total headcount in the country to over 6,000.
