Transport Minister Eamon Ryan is set to seek cabinet approval today for a new Luas line extension to Finglas, which could be operational by 2031.
The proposed expansion would see the Green Luas line extended from its current endpoint at Broombridge, covering nearly 4 kilometers and serving a population of around 60,000 people along the route.
The route will feature four new stops: St Helena’s, Finglas Village, St Margaret’s Road, and Charlestown. These new additions are designed to significantly enhance connectivity for residents in these areas, providing a faster and more convenient transport option to Dublin’s city centre.
Initially, trams will run every 7.5 minutes during peak hours, with service frequency expected to increase to every 5 minutes as demand grows. The journey from Charlestown to College Green would take approximately 30 minutes, shaving off nearly 20 minutes compared to current car travel times.
Eamon Ryan is expected to present data to the cabinet showing that this extension could significantly reduce traffic, potentially removing around 440,000 private car journeys from Dublin’s roads.
The Finglas extension is part of the broader Transport Strategy for the Greater Dublin Area, which also includes future plans to extend Luas lines to Lucan, Poolbeg, and Bray, further expanding Dublin’s public transport network in the coming years.
