Construction to begin in 2026 on stop linking community to Galway-Limerick rail line

Limerick City and County Council has granted planning permission for a new train station in Moyross, marking a significant step forward in the community’s regeneration and connectivity.
Iarnród Éireann welcomed approval of the new stop on the Galway-Limerick train line, which is funded by the Department of Transport through the National Transport Authority. The project will move to tender preparation once funding is confirmed.
Construction is scheduled to begin in 2026 with an expected completion time of 15 months. The station will be located behind Corpus Christi Primary School and Moyross Community Enterprise Centre, providing direct rail access to the growing urban area.
Hugh Creegan, acting CEO of the NTA, described the development as “a significant milestone in delivering sustainable mobility and enhanced connectivity for the community.”
“By linking Moyross directly into the broader rail network, this station is a reflection of our ongoing commitment to building a more inclusive and sustainable future for the people of Limerick,” Creegan said.
Transport Minister Darragh O’Brien emphasized the station would provide “a key public transport connection to the growing urban area of Moyross, supporting its regeneration.”
The new station represents a major infrastructural investment in Moyross, a community that has been the focus of regeneration efforts in recent years. Direct rail connectivity is expected to improve access to employment, education, and services while reducing reliance on private vehicles.
