Late-night Christmas services to commence as bridge reconstruction completed

The Red Luas Line at George’s Dock will officially reopen on Friday following three months of closure after a major fire severely damaged the bridge on 19 August.
No one was injured in the incident, but the blaze caused extensive damage to the bridge structure, forcing closure of the Luas Red Line service between Connolly Station and The Point. Bus replacement services have been operating on the affected section during the repair period.
After three months of intensive reconstruction work, the bridge has been fully rebuilt and overhead cables have been reinstalled, allowing the route to reopen in time for the start of late-night services during the Christmas party season.
Luas operator Transdev announced that late-night trams will run on Friday and Saturday, 12 and 13 December, and on Friday and Saturday, 19 and 20 December. “Night Luas” services will also operate on New Year’s Eve.
Night Luas services will run on both the Red and Green lines, with trams typically operating until 3am on designated dates. The full timetable is available on Luas.ie. Services will conclude at 8pm on Christmas Eve, with no Luas services operating on Christmas Day.
The reopening comes as welcome news for commuters, event-goers and Christmas shoppers who have relied on bus replacements during the closure. The George’s Dock section serves a crucial route connecting passengers to major venues near The Point, including the 3Arena, as well as the IFSC business district.
Transport Infrastructure Ireland thanked passengers for their patience during the disruption and praised all agencies involved in completing the reconstruction work within the expected timeframe. The reopening ensures full Luas service availability during one of the busiest periods of the year for Dublin’s public transport network.
