Renewable energy sources supplied almost half of Ireland’s electricity needs in December, according to provisional data from grid operator EirGrid.

Renewables accounted for 46.7 per cent of total electricity demand during the month, marking a significant contribution to the country’s energy mix.
Wind energy was the dominant renewable source, providing over 40 per cent of all electricity consumed. Windfarms generated a total of 1,287 GWh (Gigawatt hours) in December, highlighting their role as the backbone of Ireland’s renewable energy production.
In addition to wind, other renewable sources such as grid-scale solar and hydropower further bolstered the renewable contribution.
Total electricity demand for the month was recorded at 3,110 GWh.
EirGrid continues to lead Ireland’s transition to a low-carbon energy future, aiming to meet the Government’s target of generating 80 per cent of electricity from renewables.
