New research shows that over two-thirds of retail workers in Ireland have experienced abusive or inappropriate language or behaviour from the public, with one in five encountering such behaviour on a weekly basis.

The survey, commissioned by Circle K, Maxol, and MrPRICE Branded Bargains, also found that nearly three-quarters of retail employees have witnessed abuse directed at their colleagues.
Female retail workers reported a higher rate of such incidents, with 75 per cent experiencing abusive behaviour compared to 60 per cent of male staff.
Of those affected, 35 per cent described the behaviour as violent, aggressive, or threatening, while 22 per cent said it involved discriminatory language.
Commonly reported incidents included foul language, discriminatory remarks, aggressive behaviour, and physical contact.
Younger staff members reported the highest levels of abuse, while workers aged over 55 experienced the lowest rates.
The survey included 500 retail employees and highlights ongoing challenges faced by workers in the sector.
