Waterford–Dublin rail journeys hit record 1.92 million in 2025

Rail travel between Waterford and Dublin reached a new high last year, with 1.92 million passenger journeys recorded on the Intercity route.

According to Iarnród Éireann, the figure marks a sharp increase from 1.74 million journeys the previous year.

Record year nationwide

2025 was also a record-breaking year across the wider rail network. A total of 55.04 million journeys were made on Intercity, Commuter and DART services, surpassing the previous record of 50.7 million set in 2024.

Chief executive Mary Considine described the figures as evidence of a “higher quality, higher capacity” public transport system serving passengers and communities.

She said the growth in passenger numbers strengthens the case for continued investment in rail infrastructure to support a more sustainable transport future.

Plunkett Station redevelopment

Meanwhile, redevelopment works at Plunkett Station in Waterford are ongoing. The upgrade is expected to be completed in 2027 and forms part of the wider North Quays development led by Waterford City and County Council.

The latest passenger growth highlights increasing demand for rail services, particularly on key regional routes such as Waterford–Dublin.
