Wexford restaurant owner Biju Varavunkal dies at 53 following heart attack

Holy Grail Restaurant proprietor and prominent hospitality figure passes away after gym session

Biju Varavunkal, 53, owner of Holy Grail Restaurant in Enniscorthy, County Wexford, and a prominent figure in Ireland’s Indian hospitality sector, has died following a heart attack.

Varavunkal, a member of the Chittanappara Varavunkal family from Pala Bharananganam, suffered the cardiac arrest this morning while returning home to Enniscorthy after his regular gym training session.

Emergency medical services responded immediately and administered CPR at the scene, but were unable to revive him. His body was subsequently transferred to Waterford Hospital.

The sudden loss has shocked Ireland’s Indian-origin community and the wider Wexford hospitality industry, where Varavunkal was well-known for his contributions to the local dining scene through the Holy Grail Restaurant.

Details regarding funeral arrangements have not yet been announced as family members are notified and travel plans are coordinated.

Varavunkal’s death adds to recent losses within Ireland’s Indian-origin community, including the recent passing of Julian Agapitus, a nurse in Dublin, and Joy Ottakompananakkal, father of Migrant Nurses Ireland coordinator Varghese Joy.

The Irish Indian-origin hospitality community, colleagues, and patrons of Holy Grail Restaurant are expected to pay tribute to Varavunkal’s memory and support his family during this difficult time.

The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of cardiovascular health awareness, even among those who maintain regular fitness routines.
