During a 24-hour national “Slow Down” day, more than 200 drivers were caught exceeding the speed limit, according to the garda.
The ‘Slow Down’ operation took place from 7 a.m. yesterday till 7 a.m. today.
211 drivers were caught exceeding the speed limit, according to Garda and GoSafe, who examined the speed of 140,720 cars throughout the operation.
At Thiar rán Mór in Galway, two drivers were caught going 161 km/h in a 120 km/h zone, while on the N25 near Ballyadam, Cork, a driver was caught going 157 km/h in a 100 km/h zone.
On the N87 at Gartaquill Milltown in Cavan, another driver was found to be travelling at 132 km/h in an 80 km/h zone.
The purpose of ‘Slow Down’ day, according to the Garda, is to raise awareness of the risks of speeding, which is a significant contributing factor in traffic accidents.
According to a Road Safety Authority assessment, between 2008 and 2012, over one-third of all fatal crashes involved excessive speed.
Garda and GoSafe conducted inspections on about 174,000 cars on February 28 during the most recent “Slow Down” day, and they found 628 drivers speeding.
Garda have pleaded with motorists to obey speed restrictions in order to lessen crashes, save lives, and lessen injuries on Irish roads.
