49,000 families receive one-off €420 child benefit payment

Around 49,000 families across Ireland have received a one-off €420 child benefit payment under a scheme introduced in 2025.

The payment is part of the Newborn Baby Grant, which supports families caring for a newborn or a newly adopted child. Since the scheme was launched last year, close to 50,000 families have benefited from the grant.

The one-off payment is designed to help parents manage the added costs that come with the arrival of a baby, including essential items and early childcare needs. Families who qualify automatically receive the payment once eligibility is confirmed.

Government sources say the scheme is intended to offer practical financial relief during the early stages of parenthood, a period often associated with increased expenses.

The Newborn Baby Grant is separate from regular child benefit payments and applies only once per eligible child.
