In the last nine months, Ireland’s hospitals have witnessed a concerning surge in assaults on healthcare workers, particularly nurses, with over 2,500 incidents reported, according to the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organization (INMO). The organization highlighted nurses and midwives as the most abused group in the country, facing increasing attacks from the public.
Figures released by the INMO indicate that from January to September, a total of 4,382 healthcare workers experienced assaults at work, with nurses bearing the brunt of the violence, accounting for 2,553 cases – averaging over 65 assaults per week. Although porters, healthcare assistants, doctors, and consultants also faced attacks, nurses remain the primary targets.
The organization emphasized that many assaults go unreported, reflecting a grim reality in hospital settings. Even pediatric and maternity hospitals have seen a rise in assaults among their staff.
Expressing urgency, the INMO demanded enhanced security measures in hospitals facing severe pressure. The alarming trend underscores the critical need for immediate action to safeguard healthcare workers in Ireland’s healthcare facilities.
