Two weeks after he was killed in a car crash in Dublin, serial burglar Dean Maguire was given a solemn funeral Monday morning, followed by a hero’s burial.
Maguire was one of three men killed on July 7 when a BMW ploughed into a truck on the N7 and burst into flames. Minutes before the collision, Gardai had observed the BMW car that the three men were travelling being driven erratically in the Tallaght area. The vehicle collided when it drove the wrong way down the N7 to evade Gardai.
The 29 year old’s funeral mass took place at St Mary’s Priory Church in Tallaght, Dublin. Before the funeral mass got underway, a number of offertory gifts were placed in the church, including, a torch and screwdriver, as well as cigarettes, his cap, newspapers, his keys, a Canada Goose jacket and his registration plate.
A wake was held at the Priory Church in Tallaght before his burial at Newlands Cross Cemetery and family members and friends paid emotional tributes to Maguire while promising to look after his wife and two daughters.
A poster, featuring a collage of images of the departed burglar, was also put up at the ceremony and it read thus: “RIP Dean. You know the score, get on the floor, don’t be funny, give me the money.”Floral tributes were also laid at the altar, alongside his coffin, which read ‘Husband’, ‘Maguire’, ‘Son’ and ‘Mad Man’.
A video is circulating on social media with footage of the hearse containing the remains of Maguire and it shows the vehicle speeding through the Dublin neighbourhood, sounding horns and photographs of the deceased stuck on the back windows.
After the footage went viral, gardaí have launched a dangerous driving probe after the hearse was taken for a high-speed spin and refused to stop before traffic cops.
The scenes at the funeral of the N7 crash victim was described by a priest as “the most disturbing liturgy he was ever at.”
