The Minister for Justice asked the cabinet to approve a proposition on children who born in Ireland to Non Irish couple should be given citizenship from 3 years since birth. As of now children of non Irish parents should live there for 5 years to gain citizenship.
Children who already applied for citizens
hip after living for five years will have more priority in the process. Parents who are legal residents in Ireland only can apply for citizenship of their children.
The idea came as a result of the discussions between Helen McEntee and Labour senator Ivana Bacik. The inspiration behind this idea was a situation faced by the 9 year old Eric Due, who had lived in Ireland for 9 years but had to face deportation threat.
They opine that children who born in Ireland, even though parents are non Irish, are Irish citizens and even if they settle there for long, that’s their mother country. So it’s the duty of a government to provide citizenship soon for its children.
