Cliffs of Moher coastal trail to remain closed for 2025 tourist season

Cliffs of Moher trail, a key visitor attraction in Co Clare, is set to remain closed, or at least partially inaccessible, for the 2025 tourist season due to safety concerns.

The Cliffs of Moher, which welcomed nearly 1.5 million visitors last year, will see its coastal walking trail remain out of action after a Sport Ireland inspection deemed it unsafe.

The grade 5 walking route, comparable to Carrauntoohil in difficulty, was shut down last year following multiple fatalities.

Eoin Hogan of Clare Local Development Company (CLDC), which manages the trail, confirmed that a full reopening is unlikely in 2025.

“It’s serious construction work that has to be done. The trail is too close to the edge in certain sections. The trail has to be moved back from the edge,” he was quoted as saying by RTE.

The project requires landowner agreements, regulatory planning approvals, and coordination with Clare County Council, all of which will take time to implement.
