Cork Airport has been reopened following a 10-week closure for runway reconstruction. Taoiseach Micheál Martin officially opened the newly reconstructed main runway at a ceremony at the airport on Saturday.
The airport was fully closed to reconstruct the main runway and it would have taken up to 12 months if the closure was partial. The construction was supported by the Department of transport where €10 million was allocated along with the investment from the parent company Dublin Airport Authority (DAU). The DAU is investing over €40 million at the Cork Airport for 2020-2022.
Over 430 people worked during the reconstruction project and this is one of fastest multi-million projects completed in the recent years. The project took just 12 months to complete from approval of funding to the full completion of the construction works.
Services by eight carriers will recommence from next Monday, the airport authorities confirmed.
