More than 1,600 members of Ireland’s Defence Forces have successfully secured compensation for working excessive hours, following claims of Working Time Directive (WTD) violations. The compensation settlements address cases dating back to 2014, marking a significant victory for military personnel.

PDForra, the association representing enlisted Defence Forces members, spearheaded the legal campaign and has successfully negotiated these settlements. The organization is now actively encouraging other eligible personnel to come forward before the approaching deadline of June 16 for new compensation applications.
The Working Time Directive, designed to protect workers’ rights by regulating working hours and rest periods, has become a crucial issue within Ireland’s military services. These successful claims highlight the ongoing challenges faced by Defence Forces personnel regarding work-life balance and fair compensation for overtime work.
According to The Irish Examiner, the settlements represent a landmark achievement in recognizing the rights of military personnel to proper working conditions and appropriate compensation for overtime work. PDForra’s continued advocacy suggests that more Defence Forces members may be eligible for similar compensation, emphasizing the importance of coming forward before the deadline expires.
This development comes at a time when the Defence Forces are already facing challenges with recruitment and retention, making the proper treatment and compensation of existing personnel increasingly important for maintaining military readiness and morale.
