Dublin Airport Authority has submitted planning permission to Fingal County Council for a significant expansion of the Pier 1 West building, adding a second storey and 1,080 square metres of additional floorspace to accommodate growing passenger numbers.

The proposed development includes two new boarding gates, external circulation cores, and enhanced passenger facilities featuring additional seating, food outlets, and upgraded amenities. The expansion aims to address current overcrowding issues and improve operational efficiency at Ireland’s busiest airport.
Vincent Harrison, DAA’s Chief Commercial and Development Officer, emphasized the project’s importance beyond infrastructure. “This extension is not just about bricks and mortar, it’s a vital step in enhancing the passenger experience at Dublin Airport,” he stated, linking the development to broader efforts to secure removal of current passenger capacity restrictions.
The Pier 1 West expansion forms part of DAA’s ambitious €2.9 billion Capital Investment Programme outlined in their Infrastructure Application submitted to Fingal County Council in December 2023. The comprehensive 7,000-page submission, Ireland’s largest planning application in 2023, seeks to increase Dublin Airport’s capacity to 40 million passengers annually.
Key elements of the broader programme include Terminal 1 upgrades, a new Terminal 2 pier, expanded US Customs Preclearance facilities, and a Ground Transportation Centre. The initiative aligns with national aviation policy while supporting DAA’s environmental commitments to reduce carbon emissions by 51% by 2030 and achieve net zero by 2050.
