Dublin’s first static speed camera goes live next week in Dolphin’s Barn

Dublin city will introduce its first static speed camera next Friday, with the new safety device becoming operational on Dolphin’s Barn from August 1st at 12pm. The camera will be positioned alongside the Maxol garage on Crumlin Road in Dublin 12, marking a significant milestone in the capital’s road safety enforcement strategy. The location was selected following comprehensive analysis of collision data spanning seven years, along with speed monitoring and stakeholder consultation.

A Garda spokesperson confirmed that Dolphin’s Barn was identified through national road safety analysis as a location that would benefit from permanent speed monitoring infrastructure. The decision was based on patterns of fatal and serious injury collisions in the area, combined with recorded speed violations and community feedback. Drivers caught exceeding speed limits will face prosecution through Fixed Charge Notices, carrying a €160 fine and three penalty points. The enforcement will begin immediately when the camera becomes operational on Friday afternoon.

Dublin City Council welcomed the introduction of the first static speed camera within its jurisdiction, emphasizing its collaborative approach with An Garda Síochána throughout the installation process. A council spokesperson confirmed ongoing cooperation with gardaí on additional road safety measures. The camera represents part of broader national efforts to reduce road traffic casualties through enhanced enforcement technology, moving beyond traditional mobile speed detection methods to provide continuous monitoring of high-risk locations.
