Energia customers face energy bill increases up to €200 annually from October

Energia customers will see their electricity bills rise by up to €200 per year when new pricing takes effect on October 9th, as the energy provider implements substantial rate increases across all its residential packages.

The price hikes vary significantly depending on customer plans, with standard Energia Electricity customers facing the steepest 10.9% increase, adding €3.94 weekly or €204.88 annually to bills. Dual fuel customers will experience a 6% rise, costing an additional €3.92 per week or €203.84 yearly.

Smart meter customers will see increases of 12.1% for electricity-only plans (€193.96 annually) and 6.2% for dual fuel arrangements (€192.92 per year). The increases apply solely to electricity pricing, with gas rates remaining unchanged.

Compounding the financial impact, Energia is simultaneously reducing payments to customers who export surplus solar energy back to the grid. The clean export guarantee rate will drop from 20 cent per kilowatt hour to 18.5 cent from the same October date.

When questioned about reducing export payments while raising consumer prices, an Energia spokesperson said the microgeneration rate was reviewed “to reflect the current position of the broader market” as part of their overall rate assessment.

Managing director Gary Ryan attributed the increases to “substantial increases in electricity system operator and network charges,” describing them as “now unavoidable” despite the company absorbing similar costs over the past three years.

Ryan encouraged government investment in electricity networks to provide “pricing stability” and urged customers experiencing financial difficulty to engage with Energia’s support services. The company partners with St Vincent de Paul, MABS, and other charities to assist struggling customers.

The timing adds pressure to household budgets already strained by inflation and rising living costs across multiple sectors.
