EV sales in Ireland see surge in January with record 20% growth

New figures from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) revealed that electric vehicle (EV) sales hit a record high in January, with 4,925 EVs registered.

This marks a 20 per cent increase from the 4,093 registered in January last year.

Overall, new car registrations rose by 7 per cent to 33,521, compared to 31,407 in the same month last year. Imported used cars also saw a 5 per cent increase, reaching 5,604, up from 5,325 in January 2023.

In the new car market share by engine type, petrol remains the most popular choice at 28.24 per cent, followed by hybrid (24.89 per cent), diesel (16.31 per cent), electric (14.69 per cent), and plug-in hybrid (14.17 per cent).

The top 10 selling EV models were: Volkswagen ID.4, Kia EV3, Hyundai Kona, Kia EV6, Nissan Leaf, Skoda Enyaq, Volvo EX30, MG MG4, Ford Explorer, Hyundai Ioniq 5.
