From the end of the month, all motorists renewing or applying for motor insurance policy must provide their driver number, according to the Motor Insurers’ Bureau of Ireland.

Starting 31 March, it will be an offence for insurance providers or brokers to issue a motor insurance policy without this information.
Drivers who fail to supply the driver numbers for all named drivers on their policy will not be legally eligible for coverage.
Each motorist has a unique Driver Number, listed under section 4(d) of their driver’s licence, which remains the same for life, regardless of vehicle or policy changes.
This new requirement, introduced under the Road Traffic and Roads Act 2023, aims to enhance road safety.
The driver number details will be added to the Irish Motor Insurance Database, a tool used by Gardaí to identify uninsured drivers.
