Fundraiser for repatriating remains of Indian nurse from Ireland sees outpouring of support

The bereaved family of an Indian nurse, who tragically passed away at Cork University Hospital following a caesarean section last week, has received an outpouring of support in Ireland.

Stephy Scaria (nee Ouseph), who had been living in Abbeyfeale in County Limerick with her husband and son, died on June 21 after the operation. Originally from Sultan Bathery in Kerala, Stephy had been working as a nurse at University Hospital Kerry.

Following her death, Stephy’s husband, Baiju Scaria, had launched a fundraiser to cover the cost of repatriating her remains to India for funeral service, which will be held in India on July 1.

So far, the fundraiser has raised €75,559, surpassing the initial target of €50,000.

Repatriation can be expensive, depending on the distance to be travelled and how the body is transported.

“We are absolutely devastated by Stephy’s passing and are struggling to find the funds to cover the cost of her funeral and the repatriation of her remains to India,” Baiju wrote in a post on GoFundMe. “We will need to pay all funeral costs, and we have started a fundraiser to collect donations for Stephy’s funeral service. Please consider donating if you are able to do so. We are very grateful for every donation during this difficult time.”
