Starting today, thousands of households across the country will see their gas and electricity prices decrease. SSE Airtricity, a major energy provider, has announced a 10% reduction in prices for customers on variable tariffs. This price cut will save the average customer around €150 a year on electricity and just over €100 on gas.
This marks SSE Airtricity’s third price reduction in less than a year, bringing their energy prices down by about 30% since the peak of the energy crisis two years ago. The decrease is due to falling wholesale gas and electricity prices and will benefit around 250,000 electricity customers and 90,000 gas customers.
Despite this, Darragh Cassidy from Bonkers.ie notes that energy costs remain high, with electricity prices still about 70% higher and gas prices 80% higher than before the crisis. Households are still paying around €1,000 more annually compared to a few years ago.
Other major suppliers, including Electric Ireland, Bord Gáis Energy, and Energia, are expected to follow with similar price cuts soon. For those looking to switch providers, there are currently some attractive deals and discounts available for new customers.
