Clare TD Joe Carey has announced he will not run in the next general election, citing health reasons. Carey, who has been on sick leave since March last year, made the decision based on medical advice.
In a surprising twist, his sister Leonora plans to contest the local selection convention to replace him as the Fine Gael candidate.
According to Irish Examiner, Carey expressed gratitude for his 25-year career in public service, including 17 years as a TD. He thanked his constituents, family, and fellow politicians for their support, especially during his recent health challenges.
The outgoing TD also voiced his support for new Taoiseach Simon Harris, predicting success for Fine Gael in the upcoming election.
This family transition in Clare politics marks the end of an era for Joe Carey and potentially the beginning of a new one for his sister Leonora.
