The number of homes built in Ireland so far this year is slightly below last year’s figures, according to the Central Statistics Office (CSO).
Between January and September 2024, a total of 21,634 houses and apartments were completed, compared to 22,325 during the same period in 2023.
These figures align with forecasts from the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) and the Central Bank, both of which predicted that housing output this year would be similar to or slightly below 2023 levels.
Last year, a total of 32,548 homes were built, but government officials, including Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien, have expressed hopes of reaching 40,000 completions by the end of 2024.
Economists from the Central Bank have stressed the need for Ireland to build over 52,000 homes annually to address the housing crisis and keep up with population growth over the next 25 years.
