Since last night was the “coldest of winter so far,” Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow ice warning for Ireland.
According to the forecast, there will be icy conditions in many places today and tonight, and untreated roads and paths could be dangerous in some spots.
The alert will go into effect at noon and last until noon the following day.
The counties of Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Cavan, Monaghan, Clare, Cork, Limerick, Tipperary, Galway, and Roscommon are still under a Status Orange low temperature and ice warning until noon.
The Mount Dillon in Co. Roscommon weather station recorded the overnight’s lowest temperature, which was -8.8C. The next-lowest temperature was recorded at -7.4C in Markree Castle in County Sligo.
Met Éireann also issued a warning about patches of freezing fog that could make driving in some areas dangerous.
According to the forecast, it will continue to be extremely cold this week with scattered showers of hail, sleet, and snow, mostly near coastal areas.
People are being urged to take precautions against potentially hazardous road and path conditions, as well as possible travel disruption and burst pipes.
It is predicted to be dry and sunny this morning, but this afternoon, showers will spread across the nation, at times turning wintry and resulting in icy conditions in some places.
