The Irish government has approved two important measures to speed up the development of renewable energy. These measures, backed by Minister Eamon Ryan, focus on improving electricity storage and enabling private electricity wires.
Electricity Storage Policy
A new policy framework will increase Ireland’s electricity storage capacity. Currently, Ireland can store 800 MW of energy, but more storage is needed. This will allow excess renewable energy to be saved and used when needed, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and lowering electricity costs for consumers.
Private Wires Framework
The second measure supports the use of private electricity wires. This allows individuals, community groups, and businesses to run their own electricity cables. It will enable direct connections between renewable energy sources and users, bypassing the national grid when beneficial. This can help community projects and businesses get greener energy directly from local sources.
Minister Ryan’s Vision
Minister Ryan highlighted that these policies are essential for Ireland’s transition to a renewable energy system. They will help deploy more renewable energy and support Ireland’s climate goals by unlocking private sector resources to build new electricity infrastructure.
