Ireland-based restaurant Sheela Palace has donated Rs 5 lakh to aid the relief efforts in the landslide-ravaged Wayanad region of Kerala.
The donation has been made to the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund Kerala (CMDRF).
The landslides, which struck the villages of Mundakkai, Chooralmala, and Attamala on July 30, have claimed over 300 lives.
These villages, located within the Meppadi panchayat, have been reduced to vast stretches of slush and emptiness, marking the devastation left by the disaster.
In the aftermath, 729 families were initially sheltered in relief camps. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said 219 families remain in such camps, while others have been moved to rented houses or are staying with their relatives.
Additionally, around 75 government quarters in the district have been made ready for occupancy to accommodate the displaced families, the CM said, adding that a total of 691 families were given an emergency aid of Rs 10,000 each.
A day after the calamity, urging people to contribute generously to CMDRF, CM Vijayan had said, “More resources are required to rebuild that region. Many people have promised assistance, but that is not enough. Generous contributions are required.”
