Ireland records fourth warmest August amid ongoing climate trends

August 2025 marked Ireland’s fourth warmest August on record, with an average temperature of 16.83°C, according to Met Éireann. It was also the ninth warmest month overall in 126 years of recorded data, continuing a six-month streak of unusually high temperatures.

The highest temperature of the month was 28°C, recorded on Tuesday, August 12th. Sunshine levels were notably high, ranging from 101% of the monthly average at Shannon Airport to 123% at Casement Aerodrome. Malin Head saw the brightest day, with 13.2 hours of sunshine on Sunday, August 17th.

Rainfall was below average across most regions, making it the driest August since 2022 and the 22nd driest since 1941. Newport, Co Mayo recorded the highest monthly rainfall at 148.2 mm, while Athenry, Co Galway saw the highest daily total of 30.1 mm on Thursday, August 28th. Rain days varied significantly, from just nine in Phoenix Park to 21 in Newport.

Three of the ten warmest Augusts have occurred since 2001, highlighting a clear warming trend. The hottest August remains 1995, with an average of 17.75°C, while the coldest was in 1912 at just 11.63°C.
