Ireland spends €30 million on Foreign Affairs staff allowances over 18 months

Ireland has paid approximately €30 million in allowances to Foreign Affairs employees over an 18-month period, with figures showing a significant increase in spending compared to previous years.

A total of €19.1 million was spent on allowances in 2024, representing a substantial rise from the previous year. An additional €10 million was required beyond initial projections to meet staffing needs.

In the first six months of this year alone, €10.8 million was spent on allowances for diplomatic and consular staff.

Local Post Allowances Dominate Spending

Of the total €30 million expenditure, €15 million was allocated specifically to local post allowances, which compensate diplomats and staff for the cost of living differences when serving at Irish embassies and consulates abroad.

Local post allowances are designed to ensure that Foreign Affairs employees stationed overseas can maintain a reasonable standard of living in locations where costs may be significantly higher than in Ireland, or where specific expenses related to diplomatic service are incurred.

The increased expenditure reflects Ireland’s expanding diplomatic footprint and the rising costs associated with maintaining embassies and consulates in major cities worldwide. It may also reflect adjustments to allowances in response to inflation and currency fluctuations affecting Irish diplomats stationed abroad.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has not yet provided detailed commentary on the reasons behind the significant increase in allowance spending or whether further budget adjustments will be required in the coming year.
