For the first time, Irish people are reportedly turning more to online media than TV for their news. According to the Digital News Report Ireland’s annual survey, 33% of people in Ireland search for news through online media, excluding social media. This surpasses the 31% who rely on TV channels for their news.
Additionally, 21% of the population get their news from social media, while 12% depend on the radio. Only 3% of people look to newspapers as their main news source. This shift indicates a significant change in how Irish people consume news.
There is also a growing concern about the reliability of news found online. Over the past year, there has been a 7% increase in the number of respondents who worry about distinguishing true news from fake news online. Currently, 71% of Irish people share this concern.
The most popular online news sources in Ireland include RTE News Online, The Journal.ie, Irish Independent online, Breaking News.ie, and The Irish Times online. The report also highlights that more Irish people are willing to pay for news this year.4o
