Irish Rail pays nearly €31,000 in refunds for trains delays over 18 months

Irish Rail issued close to €31,000 in refunds to passengers over an 18-month period due to trains that were delayed by at least an hour, RTE reported.

A total of 1,794 passengers were compensated during this period with either 50 per cent of their fare for delays between 60 and 120 minutes or a full refund for delays exceeding two hours.

On average, refunds amounted to just over €17 per passenger. Despite these delays, Irish Rail reported that 99.9 percent of its services since January 2023 have run without major disruptions.

Data from Irish Rail indicated that 528 trains were delayed between one and two hours during the 18-month period ending in June of this year.

The Dublin to Belfast route experienced the highest number of delays, with 110 services running up to two hours late.

Other affected routes included Cork to Dublin with 54 delays, and Galway to Dublin with 45 delays.

The DART service saw one-hour-plus waits on 66 occasions. Additional delays were noted on the Westport line (26), trains to Sligo and the Northern line (29 each), and services to Rosslare and Waterford (22 each).

For delays exceeding two hours, the Enterprise service to Belfast was the most affected, with 17 trains arriving significantly late.
