Irish students get language boost: 800 Gaeltacht scholarships up for grabs

In a major boost for Irish language education, the government has announced €900,000 in funding for the DEIS Gaeltachta Scholarship Scheme. This significant investment will allow over 800 students from disadvantaged schools across Ireland to attend Irish language courses in Gaeltacht regions during the summer of 2025.

Ministers Catherine Martin and Thomas Byrne unveiled the expanded program, which has grown dramatically since its inception in 2019 when only 50 scholarships were available. The scheme aims to provide opportunities for students who might not otherwise be able to afford such immersive language experiences.

Each scholarship is worth up to €950, covering 85% of the total course fee for a three-week program. This represents an increase from the previous €850 cap, acknowledging rising costs and aiming to make the courses more accessible.

Minister Martin emphasized the importance of the scheme, stating, “This creates more opportunities for young people who might not normally have the chance to attend a summer course. It not only benefits the Irish language and the Gaeltacht but also promotes social inclusion.”

Minister Byrne added that the expansion is particularly significant for “accessibility, equality, and inclusion” in language education.

The Galway and Roscommon Education and Training Board (GRETB) will administer the scheme, with applications expected to open next month. This initiative is part of a broader €6 million annual investment in the Irish language college sector, underlining the government’s commitment to preserving and promoting the Irish language.

For students dreaming of improving their Irish in the heart of the Gaeltacht, this summer might just be their chance to say “Sláinte” to a new adventure in language learning.
