Dublin: Israel has reacted strongly to Ireland’s official recognition of Palestine, announcing the recall of its ambassador from Ireland. Foreign Affairs Minister Israel Katz confirmed this decision, also recalling the ambassador from Norway, which made a similar move.
Israeli ambassador Dana Ehrlich criticized Ireland’s decision, calling it a gift to terrorism and accusing Ireland of failing to condemn Hamas. Ehrlich highlighted the violence perpetrated by Hamas, citing over 1,170 Israeli civilian deaths on October 7th and ongoing conflicts resulting in numerous casualties and hostages.
Ireland’s Prime Minister Simon Harris, along with Deputy Prime Minister Micheál Martin and Green Leader Eamon Ryan, announced the recognition of Palestine, describing it as a historic decision aimed at ensuring a peaceful future for the Palestinian people. Norway and Spain have also shown support, with Spain expected to make an official announcement on May 28.
This recognition follows a 2014 bill passed by the Irish Senate and Dáil, which had not been implemented due to the need for coordination with other EU countries. Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald emphasized the longstanding decision and called for a robust peace process based on international law.
