Labour TD calls for drivers to resit theory test every 10 years

Labour TD Ciarán Ahern believes that drivers should go back to basics and sit a driving theory test every time they renew their licence.

The party’s transport spokesperson suggested that refresher courses every ten years could help tackle reckless driving on Irish roads.

Speaking in Dublin, Ahern also highlighted the need for improved public transport in rural areas to reduce reliance on driving, particularly for young people.

He stressed the urgency of cutting long waiting times for driving tests, which have significantly impacted students and workers.

Once these delays are addressed, Ahern believes the government should focus on using the system to enhance driver behaviour—starting with a mandatory theory test at each licence renewal.
