The unusual guest from Arctic is back after 4 months and a long 2,000 km journey to the Irish coasts. The Arctic Walrus, the one spotted off the coastline of Kerry in last March again appeared near Clonea Strand in Co Waterford on 2 August.
After the first appearance in March off the Irish coasts, it had travelled to the coasts of Wales, England and then to French Atlatic during these months. Again, Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (IWDG) received the images of the visitor who was seen at 11.30am on Monday, 2 August. The Walrus was swimming near a boat off Clonea Strand in Co Waterford.
The rare mammal from Arctic area which has a tusk like elephant, sometimes travel to other waters for unknown reasons. But this one has travelled at least 2,000 km said IWDG. The IWDG also said it would be difficult for the walrus to survive in Irish waters in the height of summer and it would be best if he makes his way back home in Arctic. They also warned people not to disturb the mammal and to help him find space for the return journey.
