Measles in Ireland: Over 68 cases detected so far this year

A total of 68 cases of measles have been detected in Ireland to date this year, as per the latest figures from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC).

Of the 68 cases, 34 are males, 32 are females, and the gender was not recorded for two cases.

The majority of cases have been confirmed in people aged 34 or younger. Two measles cases have been confirmed in children younger than 12 months.

Additionally, 17 possible measles cases are under investigation, HPSC data says.

Measles is a highly contagious, serious airborne disease caused by a virus that can lead to severe complications and death. According to WHO, 57 million deaths have been averted between 2000 and 2022 due to Measles vaccination.

Measles can affect anyone but is most common in children. It infects the respiratory tract and then spreads throughout the body. Symptoms include a high fever, cough, runny nose and a rash all over the body.
