Migrant Nurses Ireland Launches Cork Unit

The Cork Unit of Migrant Nurses Ireland was officially formed on Sunday, 19th May, at Brew Columbanas Hall near Cork University Hospital, attracting a large turnout of members. The unit was inaugurated by the National Convener, Varghese Joy, with Melba Whitson presiding over the meeting.

Key speakers included Catherine Courtney, the Cork Regional Industrial Relations Officer from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organization (INMO); Somi Thomas, National Treasurer of Migrant Nurses Ireland; Shinto Jose, National Executive Committee Member; and Jibin Soman, Cork Unit Member and INMO Executive Council Member. The meeting also celebrated International Nurses Day.

Honors were given to Varghese Joy, Tressya Devassi, Shyam Krishnan, and Jibin Soman for their election to the INMO Executive Council. Additionally, Reema Anthony and Arun August were recognized for being elected as Chairperson of the International Section of the INMO.

During the meeting, Melba Whitson was unanimously elected as Secretary, Rasheed Ajo as Joint Secretary, and Punita Vairamani as Treasurer. An eleven-member committee was also formed, including Melba Wilson, Shinto Jose, Jibin Soman, Rasheed Ajo, Puneeth Vairamani, Sherlyn Thomas, Susan Jacob, Minnie David, Ashley John, Niha Bacha, and Manju Sanjit. The meeting concluded with a resolution to strengthen Migrant Nurses Ireland and actively address member issues in the Cork region.
