Nationwide traffic camera system planned as pilot phase begins

Ireland has begun the first phase of a long-planned traffic camera rollout, aimed at detecting violations such as speeding, red-light breaches and bus-lane misuse, officials have confirmed.

The project is being delivered under the National Safety Camera Strategy. As part of a pilot phase, red-light cameras and traffic monitoring systems are now operational at selected locations in Dublin. The pilot will inform the wider nationwide deployment planned for later stages.

The issue of delays has been raised previously by Naois O’Muirí, with the government acknowledging that slow implementation has had a negative impact on road safety. Officials say the new systems will enable more consistent and effective enforcement of traffic laws.

For now, cameras will not be installed across all areas immediately, including parts of Dublin. The next phase will proceed only after an assessment of how effective the current pilot locations prove to be. Over time, the system is expected to expand to include speed detection and bus-lane enforcement nationwide.

The Department of Transport said road users should strictly follow traffic rules, adding that visible enforcement through cameras is expected to reduce collisions and improve overall road safety.

Further rollout timelines will be announced once the pilot evaluation is complete.
