DUBLIN – In response to a concerning 25% increase in road accidents this year, the Irish government is set to introduce legislation that will see drivers facing more penalty points for committing multiple offenses simultaneously. Under the current rules, penalty points are only applied to the most serious violation during a single incident. However, the impending change means that drivers will be charged separate fines and penalty points for each offense.
Jack Chambers, the junior minister responsible for road safety, emphasized the need for swift action, and Prime Minister Leo Varadkar has already initiated discussions with law enforcement about implementing these road safety measures more rapidly. The government is also planning a comprehensive review of speed limits to address inconsistencies on roads.
