Passport service launches “Don’t be that person” campaign for online renewals

A new government campaign has been launched urging travelers to check their passport validity and use the online renewal system well ahead of their travel dates, following a year where 92% of passport applications were processed through the digital service.

The “Don’t Be That Person” campaign, introduced by Tánaiste Micheál Martin, promotes Passport Online as the “quickest, easiest and least expensive way” to handle passport applications and renewals. The Department of Foreign Affairs reports that the service is now accessible to 99.9% of applicants worldwide, including those seeking first-time passports for children.

“I would encourage anyone who is considering travel to check that their passport is in date, and if they need to renew their passport or apply for the first time, to use Passport Online,” Martin said, noting that many families are currently planning their 2025 travels.

According to The Journal, only ‘complex’ renewals, such as passports that haven’t been renewed for an extended period, may need to use alternative application methods.

The campaign aims to prevent last-minute passport issues by encouraging early applications through Ireland.ie/PassportOnline, ensuring smoother travel preparations for Irish citizens.
