The Irish Prison Service has confirmed the death of a prisoner who became ill while in the service’s custody at Anglesea Street Courthouse in Cork on Thursday.
The 30-year-old man had just been committed to custody following a case at the Circuit Criminal Court when he became ill and had to be taken to Cork University Hospital by ambulance.
The man died while being treated at the hospital. His death is now the subject of several investigations, including a Garda investigation.
“The Irish Prison Service can confirm that there was a death in custody of a person in the custody of the Irish Prison Service on 28 October, 2022, and the next-of-kin have been notified.”
