The Data Protection Commission (DPC) of Ireland fined the world-famous messaging app WhatsApp a record €225 million. The company was fined heavily after DPC found that they have violated privacy rules after an investigation launched in 2018 following allegations.
It has been found that the tech giant had violated European Union data rules and later on The European Data Regulator has asked the DPC to increase the fines imposed on WhatsApp.
However, WhatsApp spokespersons said they cannot accept the decision to impose such a hefty fine on the company and will file appeal against it. The spokesperson said that they are committed to provide secure and private service and the information they provide is transparent and comprehensive and the company will continue to be so in the future.
The DPC had been criticized by the other European regulators for delaying investigations against tech giants earlier, including Facebook, and for imposing meager fines against them in such cases. As of the end of last year, Ireland’s data regulators had investigated 14 cases against Facebook and its affiliates, WhatsApp and Instagram. As Facebook’s regional headquarters are in Dublin, DPC is currently dealing with matters relating to Facebook’s data privacy.
