As of today, members of the Defence Forces, firefighters, and prison guards in Ireland can extend their careers by two more years. A new law allows these frontline workers to retire at 62 instead of 60.
According to Irish Examiner, this change comes after the enactment of the Courts, Civil Law, Criminal Law, and Superannuation (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2024, which was recently signed into law. The move is seen as a significant development, offering more flexibility for those serving in physically and mentally demanding roles.
The new retirement option is aimed at acknowledging the valuable experience and expertise these professionals bring to their roles. It provides them with the choice to continue their service if they feel capable and wish to do so.
The extension is optional, allowing individuals to retire at 60 if they prefer. The government believes this change will benefit both the workers and the sectors they serve by retaining skilled personnel for a longer period.
