Rising attacks on immigrants in Ireland spur petition with over 1,500 signatures

A series of violent and anti-social incidents targeting members of Ireland’s expatriate community has prompted widespread outrage and a rapidly growing petition demanding immediate government intervention.

The petition, launched by community advocate Jiby Seby Palatty on Change.org, has already gathered over 1,500 signatures. It calls on Irish authorities to address what many see as a worsening crisis in public safety, particularly for foreign nationals.

The petition follows a disturbing trend of attacks, many of which appear to be racially motivated and perpetrated by teenagers. Victims have included Indian nationals and other immigrants, who report being harassed, assaulted, and even spat upon in public.

In one case, a group of Indians playing cricket was attacked, their equipment destroyed, and they were subjected to physical and verbal abuse. In another, a woman driving with her children was surrounded by a mob that shattered her car window with a stone.

Residents affected by the violence say they now live in fear. Families reportedly organise safe escorts via messaging apps to ensure loved ones return home unharmed. Community members have raised their concerns with the Gardaí and local TDs, but complain that police response has been insufficient, citing a lack of personnel and resources.

In response, the petition outlines a series of urgent demands: the establishment of clear legal consequences for anti-social behaviour regardless of the offender’s age, the classification of racially motivated attacks as hate crimes, greater Garda presence in affected areas, stronger youth intervention programs, and updated legislation to reflect the current scale of the issue.
