Approximately 180,000 premises in the Republic of Ireland remain without power as clean-up and restoration efforts continue in the aftermath of Storm Éowyn.
In Northern Ireland, an additional 43,000 homes and businesses are still without electricity.
ESB Networks reported that while 564,000 customers have had their power restored, outages peaked at 768,000 on Friday morning. The operator stated that the vast majority of affected customers in the Republic should have power restored by Friday.
To accelerate restoration efforts, crews from Austria and Finland are arriving today to assist in the hardest-hit areas, particularly in the north of the country.
Minister for Housing, Local Government, and Heritage James Browne described Storm Éowyn as “a storm without precedent,” calling it the most damaging and destructive weather event ever recorded in Ireland.
He acknowledged that the scale of the damage has stretched response capacities, making immediate restoration for all services impossible.
The Minister also announced that a review of the storm and its impact will be conducted to identify lessons for managing future extreme weather events.
