Temu faces potential breach of EU digital marketplace rules over unsafe products

Chinese online retailer Temu is under investigation by the European Commission over potential violations of the EU’s digital marketplace regulations. Preliminary findings reveal that the platform has been selling illegal products, including small toys for infants and miniature electronics, which could pose safety risks.

According to The Journal, The European Commission’s investigation suggests that Temu has failed to adequately manage the sale of such items, raising concerns about the retailer’s adherence to strict EU product safety standards. Irish Commissioner for Consumer Protection Michael McGrath has expressed serious concerns regarding the safety record of Chinese retailers like Temu, highlighting a broader issue with the importation of products from China to Europe.

If the investigation confirms the breaches, Temu could face significant penalties, potentially reaching millions of euros. The Irish Digital Services Officer will be responsible for collecting the fine, given that Temu’s European headquarters are located in Dublin.

McGrath has emphasized the importance of enforcing EU consumer protection laws, not only to ensure the safety of European consumers but also to maintain fair competition for European businesses. The European Commission is expected to continue its probe, with further actions depending on the final findings.
