Two men have been charged with the murder of journalist Lyra McKee in Northern Ireland. The 29-year-old McKee was shot dead in Derry in 2019 during a riot.
Two men aged 21 and 33 have also been charged with possession of a firearm and ammunition with intent to endanger life, riot, possession of petrol bombs, throwing petrol bombs and arson. The 33-year-old has also been charged with robbery. Another person aged 20 has been charged with riot, possession of petrol bombs and throwing petrol bombs.
The accused are due to appear before Derry Magistrates’ Court via video link today morning.
Ms McKee was shot while she was observing a riot took place in the Creggan area on 18 April 2019. She was standing beside the policemen and suddenly was shot in the head from an unknown assailant. She was taken to hospital and later pronounced dead.
Violence broke out after police raids on dissidents with the aim of seizing munitions ahead of the Easter Rising commemorative parades due to take place in the area. A masked man opened the fire and the police believes he is a member of the New IRA.
