390 new safety camera zones to launch as road deaths reach decade high

Ireland will see 390 new safety camera zones become operational on New Year’s Day 2026, as authorities respond to the highest level of road fatalities in over a decade.

The expansion will bring the total number of operational zones to over 1,500 across the country. Significantly, 55 of the new locations are “community request zones” identified as areas of concern by local residents and gardaí.

The rollout comes as 2025 recorded 186 road deaths, marking the worst year for Irish road safety in more than ten years. All camera zones are positioned in areas with a documented history of speed-related collisions.

Dublin will receive the most new cameras with 35 zones, followed by Cork (30), Donegal (26), Tipperary (23), and Wexford (21). All locations are publicly available on the Garda website and accessible to GPS navigation providers.

Assistant Commissioner Catharina Gunne emphasized that while most drivers comply with speed limits, a “small persistent cohort of selfish, dangerous drivers” continue to exceed posted limits, endangering vulnerable road users including children, elderly people, and cyclists.

The cameras aim to reduce speed-related collisions through targeted enforcement in high-risk areas identified through analysis of fatal, serious, and minor collision data.
